Preparing for the 2G Switch‑Off with VoLTE

May 26, 2026

UK mobile networks are undergoing a major transition, with 3G already largely switched off and 2G scheduled to be phased out in the coming years, potentially around 2030. For organisations relying on lone worker safety devices, these changes have important implications.

Traditional lone worker devices were designed to operate on 2G and 3G networks, using these technologies for voice calls, text messages and data transmission. While these networks have been reliable for many years, they will ultimately no longer be supported as operators reallocate capacity to 4G and 5G.

What Is VoLTE?

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) allows voice calls to be made directly over 4G networks, rather than falling back to 2G. This is a key consideration as organisations look to futureproof lone worker solutions and ensure voice communication remains available as networks evolve.

It’s important to note that not all 4G devices support VoLTE. Some devices continue to rely on 2G for voice calls, even when using 4G for data. As 2G coverage declines, this could present a significant risk to service continuity and the failure of critical voice call alarms to be made and connected to the 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs).

Supporting Future Connectivity

Reliance Protect continues to work proactively with customers to help them understand network changes and prepare for the transition away from legacy technologies. This includes supporting migration planning, reviewing device capabilities and ensuring solutions are aligned with changing mobile networks landscape.

As part of this approach, Reliance Protect has introduced the new Pulse+, a new lone worker device built with 4G connectivity and VoLTE capabilities. The Pulse+ joins our ID+ 4G VoLTE lone worker device. The new Pulse+ has been developed to support future network requirements and help organisations maintain reliable lone worker safety solutions as 2G networks are phased out.

Planning Ahead

With network changes already underway, organisations are encouraged to review their existing lone worker solutions and ensure their devices are prepared for the future.
