Lone workers in transport and logistics can be vulnerable

Some employees within the transport, logistics, and distribution industries face the risk of threat on a daily basis and those working alone have a heightened susceptibility to these risks.

In the last 5 years, 1 in 6 truck drivers have suffered attacks according to the International Road Transport Union. This has become a growing trend and recently there has been an increase in stowaways for vehicles crossing borders, which puts the driver at further risk. Furthermore, there is a rise in targeting lorries with valuable cargo, including nickel and copper. Items such as alcohol, cigarettes, computers, branded clothing and prescription drugs are also high on the criminals’ list. The British Transport Police report that train, tube, tram drivers and station staff receive verbal, racial and physical threats from abusive and disgruntled customers on a daily basis.
